Winternight Trilogy Review

Book Order: The Bear and the Nightingale, The Girl in the Tower, The Winter of the Witch

Author: Katherine Arden

Genre: Fantasy

Publisher: Cornerstone

Published: 2017, 2018, 2019 (Paperback format)

A Quick Summary:

The trilogy is set in medieval Russia and draws on the Russian folklore of ancient spirits and old magic. It follows young Vasya who is gifted to be able to see these creatures and guardians of her home. The Winter King takes an interest in Vasya and the role she has to play in the survival of the spirit realm as the people of Russia give up their old traditions in favour of Christianity.

Thoughts:

I devoured this trilogy as quickly as I could. The mystery and suspense were held beautifully throughout the story as it unfolded, I found myself consumed with thoughts about it whenever I had to put the book down. I adored Vasya and how she grew and began to understand her power. Her abilities isolated her from her family and loved ones. Vasya had to face so many challenges alone - you couldn't help but will for her to succeed, and other characters to understand and trust her. I felt that all three books were beautifully written, the first book particularly was drenched in that dark atmospheric mystery that can only be achieved in fairy tales.

I think what indicates that you have read a good story though, is when you reach that final line and come away feeling like you have been on a journey with that character. I felt like I had fought alongside Vasya in her most challenging battles. No matter where she went after this Vasya and those most important to her would turn out just fine. I would recommend this trilogy to anyone who enjoys mystery, folklore or history.

I read this trilogy in the height of summer and I look forward to rereading them on some cold winter nights!
